Construction Trades in Kentucky

For over 150 years (ACMs) Asbestos-containing materials, were used widely in building construction. What was produced comprised of over 3000 products that include wallboards made of asbestos, (fireproof) shingles, acoustic tiles, insulation, flooring band ceiling texture, and sadly they are still manufactured & sold in the United States, with asbestos.

So you can see… it still possesses a problem today. Those that work in renovation and demolition of buildings are at a significant risk of exposure and should seek medical attention. Historic buildings are all over Kentucky, It’s not unlikely that dangers such as those of asbestos will continue undetected by local health authorities such as the EPA.

Chemical Plants

Chemical Plants such as the Louisville Chemical Plant & Alcoa Aluminum was known to have used Crocidolite.   Others refer to it as blue asbestos. An extremely dangerous, spear-like fiber that is highly resistance to acidic and corrosive chemicals, and tends to destroy our cells more than the white version of Asbestos referred to as Chrysotile asbestos.

Military Bases

During the beginning of World War II, the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, constructed Fort Campbell, used asbestos in their buildings as well as their boiler rooms. Army personnel stationed there, including maintenance workers, and pipe-fitters, between 1940 & 1970 were most likely exposed to a considerable amount of asbestos.

Asbestos – was the cause of death for 1 out of every ten thousand Kentuckians during a period of 20 years before the turn of the century in the year 2000. Seventy-five percent of these were due to mesothelioma & concentrated itself profoundly around the urbanized Louisville sector. Between asbestosis and mesothelioma, mesothelioma is more fatal than the other. Asbestosis is not malignant and can be treated, while Mesothelioma is not curable; most die within eighteen months.
