The majority of asbestos exposure in this State is job site related as Wisconsin has no naturally occurring asbestos deposits. The two main companies that need mentioning are Georgia Pacific and Kimberly Clark, both of which are large scale paper producers. Kimberly Clark was notorious for its use of asbestos related products in its mills. Although asbestos exposure is not common in the paper and pulp mill industry several processes that these companies used had dangerously high amounts of asbestos containing materials and thus employees were affected.

Cities in Wisconsin

We have gathered a list of cities in Wisconsin where asbestos related work sites been located. If you or a loved one worked with any of the listed companies or on these job sites, there is a good possibility that you may have been exposed to harmful asbestos, which can have many detrimental effects to your health. In some cases it takes many years for asbestos exposure to cause illness, and symptoms may seem mild at first, but usually lead to mesothelioma cancer. These cities/work sites are where asbestos exposure has been reported:

Buildings & Powerplants

As most are aware asbestos exposure is common when older buildings begin to deteriorate. This is due in large part to the insulation (that contained asbestos) that was being used by companies prior to the discovery of its risks. Wisconsin has had several diagnoses that stemmed from buildings breaking down and the underlying asbestos being exposed.

This state also has a number of power plants which utilized brown and blue asbestos in almost all facets of their production. This is especially disturbing because asbestos inside machinery has been known to radiate outwards subjecting hazardous levels on those nearby.

Statistics & Reported Deaths

Wisconsin has had over 700 asbestos related fatalities in the last twenty years. These numbers are considerably higher than the national average. The Milwaukee area alone accounted for nearly 150 of these deaths.

Asbestos Regulations

There is an organization called, The Lead and Asbestos Section.  They regulate public asbestos usage in products/buildings and they also monitor lead-based paint activity.  The regulations followed are derived from the website of the Revisor of Statutes Bureau.

  • Ch 254(link is external), Wis. Statutes, Environmental Health
This state statute directs the regulating authority of the Lead and Asbestos Section regarding asbestos abatement certification and asbestos management. (PDF, 427 KB)
  • DHS 159, This Administrative Rule regulates asbestos certification and training course accreditation.
