What Is Mesothelioma?
It is a rare form of cancer caused by inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma commonly affects the linings of our organs and this lining is called the mesothelium. The next 4 organs are going to be listed from most common to rare. The lining of the lungs (pleura mesothelium) which then becomes pleural mesothelioma. Next is the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum mesothelium) which becomes peritoneal mesothelioma. Following that, asbestos can also attack the lining of the heart (pericardium mesothelium) which becomes pericardial mesothelioma. Lastly, and considered the most rare asbestos can reach the lining of testis causing Tunica Vaginalis.
Mesothelioma is a difficult cancer to diagnose and often is not diagnosed until the disease has reached the later stages. Many people and doctors mistake the warning signs for other common illnesses such as a cold or upper respiratory infection. If you have been exposed to asbestos, don’t wait until your symptoms have a negative impact on your life before you see a physician.
Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive disease and is usually not detected until it has reached the advanced stages of cancer. Because of this, the prognosis a patient receives is usually not favorable. The average survival rate after a diagnosis of mesothelioma is only a year or two. However, treatments are getting better every day and the prognosis is improving. Cases that appear to be hopeless sometimes turn out to be not quite so bleak.
Veterans With Mesothelioma
Almost every branch of the Armed Forces used asbestos until the 1970’s. It was used in vehicles, ships and aircraft because it was highly regarded for its resistance to heat as well as its fire-proofing capabilities.

Cell Types Of Mesothelioma
There are three main mesothelioma cell variations:
Epithelioid – The most common with a better prognosis compared to the other two types.
Sarcomatoid – or fibrous which accounts for about 10% of mesotheliomas. Most rare and worst possible prognosis.
Biphasic – Mixed type – these mesotheliomas have epithelioid and sacromatoid cell characteristics.

The 4 Stages Of Mesothelioma
Doctors use four primary stages to determine as well as describe how advanced the cancer is within the body, how many tumors there are, and how far the cancer has spread. Watch video on the right to learn more.
Chemotherapy for Mesothelioma Treatment
Chemotherapy also known as systemic therapy, is administered either orally or by infusion to kill any cancer cells that are in the body, and there are a variety of medications. Although it is not curative it has proven to help increase the survival rate. Chemotherapy is also used to reduce pain and improve the patient’s quality of life.
