Georgia is a virtual hotbed for asbestos activity and one of the more troublesome areas in all of the U.S.  This is due in large part to the vast amounts of natural locations that asbestos can be found. On top of the risks associated with nature this State is also known for a multitude of asbestos related industries.

Natural Asbestos in Georgia

The Appalachian Mountain Range is the primary culprit for the high levels of naturally occurring asbestos in this State. Being one of the oldest ranges in the world the Appalachians have eroded over millions of years thus bringing more asbestos to the mountains surface. This mountain range starting in Alabama crosses the northwestern part of Georgia before heading further north and extending all the way up to Maine and the southern parts of Nova Scotia.

The Company / Industrial Side

On the industrial side of the coin Georgia, as one of the oldest States, played host to a varying degree of asbestos related companies. Most of the risks for tradesmen came from being employed at a power plant and Georgia had no shortage of these. The Georgia-Pacific Company, whose roots began in Atlanta, was known for using a dangerously high amount of asbestos contaminated materials in its production of paper. The company to combat these misgivings has set up a trust fund for the sole purpose of covering liabilities associated with mesothelioma and asbestos related disease.

Deaths in Georgia

Georgia has had a staggeringly high number of fatalities related to asbestos cancer most of which were diagnosed as mesothelioma. Over five hundred deaths have been reported in the last twenty years almost double that of its neighbor to the south (Florida).
