There are numerous naturally-occurring asbestos deposits in the western part of Main which also border many more deposits in Canada along with their manufacturing plants.

Cities in Maine: Exposed to Asbestos

If you or anyone you know has ever lived and or worked, in any of the following cities, there is a likelihood that you might have been unknowingly unprotected and therefore your health detrimentally affected. Since asbestos is known to be the only cause of cancer in the mesothelium, we listed four cities immediately below (factories / companies located in these cities further down the page).  If you or a loved one may have been connected to these cities in any way shape or form, we recommend consulting a physician and/or oncologist to make sure you have not been affected.

Augusta  –  Lewiston  –  Portland  –  South Portland

Natural Deposits of Asbestos

If you look on the map, there is only one major highway S.R. 27, and it skirts the NW region, close to the shores of the Chain Lakes. Fortunately, the main part of the state of Maine, where most of the asbestos deposits happen to be, is barely populated. If you head along the Maine’s eastern border, that is another story altogether. Here is where you find three Asbestos Deposits. The first is along Maine’s east side, bordering with Canada’s province of New Brunswick, while the other (2) deposits are found along the coast on the peninsula which separates Blue Bay from Penobscot Bay. As a precaution, those that live and or work in these areas should find a medical clinic be tested for exposure to asbestos.

Natural Asbestos Sources

AS in Most states, Maine has numerous oldhistoric buildings, many if not most, have asbestos in them. The fact of the matter is, the state’s Department of Environmental Quality has identified close to 100 different public buildings, or job sites in which asbestos has been located in populated areas around the cities of Presque Isle, Portland, Bangor, and Auburn. They include:

  • hospitalsiron foundries
  • military installations
  • paper mills
  • power generation plants
  • shipyards
  • school buildings
  • warehouses

Statistics

In the state of Maine, within the last thirty years there have been close to 400 fatalities due to asbestos. Most of these were due to asbestosis rather than mesothelioma. In reality this does not make sense, because asbestosis is not malignant nor progressive.   The difference between these two fatal diseases is AWARENESS! This the key… Mesothelioma is incurable but with asbestosis, once the person is removed from the source of asbestos, the disease stops, especially if treated.
